Fact Friday- #2 Geography II

Santiago, The Capital-

Santiago is located in Central Chile at 33.4500° S, 70.6667° W. It is 422 miles north of Temuco (my city). The Mapocho River flows through Santiago to the Pacific Ocean. It is also the largest city in Chile.

Where Was Chile?-

Chile has a long history of boarder disputes with it's neighbours. Early on, Chile lacked much of its northern section, as well as Punta Arenas. However, in 1879 Chile acquired a piece of south-west Bolivia, adding to the northern part. Over time Chile also has secured Patagonia and more from Argentina, creating a rivalry between the two countries. Finally, recently, in 2012, Chile signed a treaty with Peru in which Chile established its coastline territory with Peru. Thus, has Chile acquired land from all three of its neighbours, making it what and where it is today.

Internal Travel-

My host mom and my sister said that they travel a lot inside Chile. They own a beach house on the coast, and visit it often in the summer. They also visit Santiago every year.

The Effect of Tourism-

Tourism in Chile is not one of the main sources of revenue, but it does contribute significantly to their economic and job growth. In 2011 $1,400 million was made by tourists. An increase in the want for sustainable tourism has helped to preserve many of Chile's natural attractions, and is now Chile's main tourism planning strategy. On the other hand, especially on Easter Island, tourism impacts the population and resource distribution negatively, hurting locals and their well being.
